2016年7月22日，为更好的落实国家发展战略，推动长三角和长江经济带加快发展，加快崇明生态岛建设，经国务院批准，撤销崇明县，设立崇明区。上海市时辖16个区。崇明撤县设区标志着县级行政建制在上海成为历史，上海城市发展进入新阶段。

2019年，上海市时辖黄浦区、徐汇区、长宁区、静安区、普陀区、虹口区、杨浦区、闵行区、宝山区、嘉定区、浦东新区、金山区、松江区、青浦区、奉贤区、崇明区，共计16个区。
上海将继续优化城市空间布局，落实主体功能区战略，扩大生态空间、保障农业空间、优化城镇空间。上海将努力建设成为卓越的全球城市、具有世界影响力的社会主义现代化国际大都市。
